Maddox®

Maddox ®, Ion Exchange Catalyst , is generally known as a Green Sand. Was developed as more efficient homogenious granular filter media to extract dissolved salts of Iron Arsenic Manganese and Alumina found in South African raw waters. Local legislation demanded that drinking potable waters had to comply with South Africa Bureau of Standards SABS 241:2005. In the case of soluble Iron class 1 waters were acceptable upto max 200 mg/litre. In other countries a maximum of 10 mg/litre was permissible. South Africa a country with huge mineralization on various minerals especially Iron presence in the highly ferruginous sails and massive deposits of Iron Ore was a country side problem.

Maddox® became a useful low cost tool to overcome the problem. In many instances as South Africa has a large percentage of the world’s Manganese deposit a combination of both salts was a common problem. Over the past 10 years Maddox has been used ubiquitously with a great deal of success. Over time Water Engineers have upgraded its usage with sharp eye on such water data Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Dissolved Organic Carbons (DOC). The correct use of re-generation oxidants such as Potassium Permanganate Hypo Ozone / Activated Oxygen’s and Hydrochloric Acids depending on the raw water consistency. Generally specially on up flow design of the Maddox tank is preferred as when , as happens from time to time, the loading increases the oxidized Iron is subsequently entrapped in Silica Sand filter.
