History

The South African company was founded in 1971. Initial orders were for fine milled coal dust and slate for use in the coal-tar paints. The paints were applied as lagging for two metre wide reticulation pipes. Later, business was expanded to include the milling of specialist coal dusts for the foundry industry.

This Experience combined with an inherent knowledge of the chemical composition of clay bodies and glazes for pottery and ceramics, led to an appreciation of the commercial viability of base minerals to other industries.

South Africa, with an enviable diversity of mineral wealth, can provide all that manufacturers require to produce products of the highest standard.

For more than 38 years, African Pegmatite has obtained indigenous raw materials from many sources and, by crushing, milling, blending, calcining or purifying, provide a range of materials used in many different industries.

Specialised milling of organic and inorganic minerals and chemicals, has become a large part of our business. Special blends of compounds such as ECA, graphite or petroleum coke, are milled to customer's specification for special applications.

Whilst base minerals are not glamorous in themselves, they do contribute considerably to the appeal of many finished products and without them, there may be no product at all.

Adding minerals or, a blend of certain elements to a pottery frits or a chemical formula, can improve colours, surface textures, aesthetic appeal and performance characteristics of the end product. Pottery and glazed surfaces are made more beautiful and, imperfections are eliminated in foundry castings and other manufacturing processes.

A tradition spanning over 150 years

The Wenger name has been associated with base minerals, pottery and ceramics ever since A.F. Wenger, born in Lausanne Switzerland in 1837, joined his uncles pottery company, Soc. Ceramic Richard Ginori in Malan around 1850.

He was soon to become chief chemist for the company and was sent by the Municipality of Milan to report on ceramics at the empire exhibition in London in 1871. Impressed by the high standards achieved by British potters, he decided to relocate and ultimately establish Wengers Limited in Staffordshire. the home of English pottery.

Being fluent in French, German and Italian allowed him to travel widely in Europe and maintain valuable business connections. He earned a reputation as a practical potter and a connoisseur, with considerable artistic prowess. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Fellow of the Chemical Society.

Mr A.F. Wenger introduced numerous "modern" improvements to pottery manufacture such as vapourisers for spraying colours onto the ware and was the first manufacturer of lustres in England. Liquid gold was another of his creations and before the second world war, Wengers Ltd was the sole supplier of that in the U.K. The Wenger family business has been a force in the Staffordshire pottery industry for five generations. This tradition has been carried through to the South Africa company and has created sound technological base from which the group has grown. Mr. E. "Ted" Wenger, M Ceram, founder of the South African company, is a great grandson to the original A.F. Wenger.
